The Caregiver’s Oath

1. I shall abide by State laws and agency policies regarding humane treatment of persons for whom I am responsible.

2. I shall defend clients’/consumers’ right to proper safe, comfortable and dignified care.

3. I understand that all forms of corporal punishment are prohibited.

4. I understand that all forms of demeaning, insulting, threatening language or gestures are prohibited.

5. I shall refrain from all forms of rough handling, excessively forceful or unauthorized interventions.

6. I shall not engage in emotional or sexual harassment or approach, manipulate or coerce clients/consumers into sexual activities or discussions.

7. I understand that there is no circumstance that shall warrant the use of harmful force.

8. I understand that I am accountable for the judgment I use in determining what shall or not cause a client/consumer harm as a result of my actions or inaction.

9. I shall refrain from the use of obscene, profane or offensive language in my role as caregiver.

10. I shall not add to a client’s/consumer’s distress by my response.

11.I shall avoid needless confrontations.

12. I shall employ interventions only after I have attempted less intrusive means of distracting or calming a client/consumer.

13. I shall never retaliate against a consumer for his or her actions against me, a co-worker, or another client/consumer.

14. I shall prevent harm by separating aggressive persons or removing clients/consumers who might be endangered by them.

15. I shall call for assistance whenever I feel a client/consumer is becoming agitated or might be calmed by the presence of another person.

16. I shall report abuse and neglect or actions by co-workers that might result in abuse or neglect.

17. I shall not experiment with methods not duly authorized by the client’s/consumer’s treatment team.

18. I shall ask for help or additional training when I am confused or concerned about my responses to clients/consumers.
